Interiors of Wikileaks’ (former) server bunkers in Sweden

ADVERTISEMENTS

The world seems to be revolving around a certain unicorn haired man who happens to be the storm center of a controversy that has rocked governments around the globe. Whether you stand by Julian Assange or those who oppose his actions, we think it shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying these fascinating images of Wikileaks’ (former – see update below) server facilities in Stockholm. In fact we had posted some of these images in a previous post but so much fresh info, snaps and videos have come since then and we thought this definitely was worth a new feature.

julian-assange

Wikileaks is hosted by Swedish internet company Bahnof whose offices are actually repurposed nuclear bunkers built during the World War II era. Fit to be a James Bond villain’s abode, the facility is carved right into the side of Vita Berget (The White Mountain) in Södermalm borough area of Stockholm and it was refurbished with assistance from local architects Albert France-Lanord. Though Wikileaks’ data constitute only two of the 8000 servers that exist at the facility, they could very well be the company’s most controversial client. :)

UPDATE: Latest developments have forced Wikileaks to move bases pretty regularly. The servers have now moved to Switzerland after been ousted from Sweden and France.

The Adams Fleming House by Levitt Goodman Architects

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Adams Fleming House is located on 80 Ritchie Avenue, Toronto, Canada. The house was completed in September 2008 and designed by Levitt Goodman Architects. The clients is a graphic desiger and furniture designer/craftman with a limited budget but considerable talent and resources. Working with Levitt Goodman Architects, the project became a laboratory for artistic collaboration and experimentation. Over several years they have transformed the industrial site into an artful urban oasis.

The owner, Peter and Debbie have a great opportunity to enjoy the quiet fugue of their home and their fine collections of modernist furniture and contemporary art thanks to an introverted strategically plan that shuts out the auditory and visual noise of the city to their modern home.

The private areas of the house are nestled into one corner, with the kitchen, dining and living rooms forming an “L” around them. These are bathed in sunlight and feature panoramic views of the gardens through oversized windows that were once the garage doors. The bedrooms and bathrooms are raised on a platform, creating domestic ceiling heights as well as much-needed storage underneath. A second storey was added with a large open studio space for work and musical jam sessions. The roof is prepped for a future roof garden that will create the impression that the house is fl oating in a field while also tempering the temperature and air quality of the house.

The fluid collaboration of experts on this project has resulted in a house that exudes originality and extraordinary craftsmanship. A clear celebration of art is merged with an ecological emphasis, transforming industrial debris into a domestic sanctum with an artistic and rural sensibility.
