1/Buy garden furniture made from locally produced wood

There is no excuse for buying teak furniture (even if it is sustainably forested) when so much environmental damage is done shipping it halfway around the world. Choose English Oak from local managed woodland, or if you must have teak, choose furniture made from salvaged or recycled wood

2/Buy recycled garden furniture, or garden furniture that is made from reclaimed materials

Small Balcony Ideas

I have a really small balcony (1m x 4m) which faces north and it’s lovely to sit with a cup of coffee, read the paper or munch on a piece of toast in the morning sunshine – if only I could fit! No matter how many different ways I have tried to organise that balcony, it has been a constant decorating challenge. Small tables and chairs always over-crowd the space making it impractical to move around and walk down to the yard - until I discovered the Hanging Balcony Table.

It looked pretty ridiculous online, but for $59.95 it was worth giving it a try.When it arrived, it was a little larger than I thought and solved the problem perfectly. Coupled with a bench seat from IKEA and these cute little pink and scarlet outdoor cushions, I have the perfect place to sit in the mornings to watch the birds and enjoy the sunshine.

Here are a few other small balcony ideas I have uncovered while researching my own little project… Urban Balcony has some great furniture ideas including these ones for small spaces:

Burkes Backyard featured a small balcony makeover one episode including converting aluminium toolboxes into bench seats that also double as storage. I’m not too keen on the look personally, but I was originally thinking of having a piece of furniture custom made to fit in this space which could act as a kind of small daybed and storage box at the same time. They also featured another balcony makeoverwhich looks much better including custom designs furniture and wooden deck tiles.

A Modern Mix
When architect Robert M. Gurney gutted his clients’ 1876 Washington, DC, row house, his intent was to create a clean, minimalist aesthetic while respecting the property’s historic lineage. Its master bath is a case in point. From the bedroom, a crisply detailed bank of oak cabinetry leads into the space. The architect juxtaposed floors and walls in white Calcutta Gold marble—which plays to a historical context—with a long L-shaped stainless-steel sink. Transparent glass tiles echo the simple color scheme. “We wanted to keep the overall palette light,” says Gurney, “and the design timeless but modern.” The sculptural tub, stainless-steel sconces, contemporary faucets and fixtures and sandblasted glass tile in the toilet area—all from Waterworks in Georgetown—reinforce the architect’s vision. These amenities have transformed the once-outdated bath into a veritable home spa. “The shower is basically a water park,” says Gurney, “with a bench, a hand-held shower, two rain showers and a standard shower. You can spend a lot of time in there.”

A Soothing Escape
Overlooking rolling hills and pastures in Ashland, Virginia, this new master-bath addition brings luxury and style to a Southern country manor. Architect Doug Bowman and interior designer Jennifer Stoner created a new wing off the owners’ bedroom, converting the existing bath into his-and-hers wardrobes, each of which opens to angled hallways with separate vanities and water closets for the husband and wife. The hallways converge at an archway leading to dual showers and an octagonal room framed in windows. Here an oversized soaking tub and two chaises create a “light and airy spa-like retreat where the homeowner can come and soak at the end of the day,” says Stoner. The 17-foot-high space boasts a hand-troweled and domed ceiling with a dramatic Currey & Co. chandelier, a mosaic marble floor, granite countertops, a coffee station and heated floors. The owners can enjoy the views of their surrounding farm—or drop the automated shades for complete privacy

Eco-Friendly Retreat
The concepts of green living and health and well-being often go hand in hand. Ernesto Santalla designed a modern bath retreat that embodied these ideals in last year’s CharityWorks GreenHouse—a sustainably built showhouse in McLean,
Virginia, that was sold to a family who toured it.

All of the materials, furnishings—and even the art—Santalla selected are sustainable. A centerpiece of the space is the shower wrapped in cedar with a wall of river-rock stones and a cascading waterfall (using re-circulated water) that introduces sounds of nature into the mix. Artwork includes a large abstract piece by Dan Steinhilber made with recycled plastic bags (over the day bed) and a delicate hanging sculpture made by Barbara Josephs Liotta from remnants of black granite hanging near the cedar shower enclosure.

Santalla’s creation illustrates how a spa can fit into any space in a home. “A bathroom doesn’t have to be fully enclosed,” he says. “You can expand the notion of a spa to include a living area with a relaxation space.”

Worldly Opulence
When a homeowner purchased a McLean, Virginia, residence, he put it on a fast track for renovation. The design team, including architect David Cooper and interior designer William Paley, found inspiration in the many luxe hotel bathrooms their client has visited, and combed the globe for materials of the highest quality that would create a completely unique sanctuary, according to Patricia Tetro, project leader for BOWA, the renovation contractor. Custom elements include lacquered doors from Hong Kong, mosaic tiles from Italy, a travertine tub from Mexico and shagreen vanities from France framed by verre élgomisé panels gilded in platinum-leaf Arabic letters.

From private dressing areas, a stone passage leads past twin vanities toward the tub—which is so large that it had to be lowered into the space by crane. How to Keep your Home Always Smelling Fresh

The atmosphere of your home is one of the ‘unsaid’ aesthetics that keeps you loving your home. When you are in it day in and day out, the way your home smells and feels will actually have a stronger impact then the décor in your space! So what factors keep your home smelling fresh and which one’s contribute to their

• Determine the culprits of odor: There are different sources that can contribute to your home’s odors including: must, old age, pets, food and daily regimen, poor air circulation, smoke, old finishes – carpet/wallpaper, etc.. and a host of others.  Depending on the odor you will first have to determine where the odor is coming from.  When you have lived in your home for a while, you may be insensitive to the odor, and will need to ask a friend or neighbor for advice on the source of odor in your home.
• Solving the issue: Once you found the issues use the following tips to keep the smell away:

o   Musty odors: If musty odors are caused from an aging home consider painting walls, changing wallpaper, replacing carpet, and refinishing wood floors.  If odor is from old furniture, read our Freshome post about removing musty odors from furniture. Musty odors are some of the hardest to get rid of due to age and the smell could be embedded into the home.

o   Pets: Odors from pets can be from pet stains in carpet/pad or furnishings, or it can be from wet fur of animals.  Try getting your carpets steam cleaned on a regular basis and get pets house trained to keep carpets smelling fresh. Consider using a carpet powder or light baby powder on carpet and vacuum.

o   Food & Daily regimen: Your household regimen and food that you cook on a regular basis could be the source of odor in your home. It doesn’t mean you have to change your cooking habits, but the routine of cleaning and airing out your kitchen may need to.  Use the range hood vent when cooking to remove cooking odors from the air. Empty the trash immediately after disposing of food, and consider double bagging if necessary. Have neutralizers in your kitchen to expel odor while you create them. Turn on garbage disposal immediately after placing food in – and put fresh lemons down drain to keep clean and odor free.

o   Poor air circulation and smoke: Both of these causes can be addressed by opening up windows on a regular basis to let fresh air move throughout your home. Change your air filters on your heating/air conditioner unit per the manufacturer’s instructions. You can also buy scented inserts especially made for your vented system to disperse smell throughout your home. Consider not smoking in your home to truly expel smoke odor in your home. Smoke settles into finishes and can stay for years into the future.

• Keeping your home smelling fresh: Once you have solved the issue you will need to take on a new regimen for routinely keeping your house smelling fresh. If your home’s source is from being unclean, it will be important to clean more often and more thoroughly. Consider hiring a cleaning service for an initial clean that you can later maintain, or hire on a regular basis. Teach teenager’s to wash athletic clothes, bed linen, and bath linen on a regular basis. Believe it or not, these can harbor germs quickly and cause odors.

Your home can smell clean all the time with diligence and identifying the source of the odors. Take the time to make your home smell inviting and fresh. You will feel better in your home and notice guests will enjoy it too. You just may find a new reason to stay at home and entertain more once your home is more inviting to all! Casa Larga was designed by Swiss architect Daniele Claudio Taddei and is located in Brissago, Switzerland. Overlooking a picturesque landscape and situated near lake Maggiore, the residence sits like a giant monolith which seems to guard the wonderful surrounding views. The light-flooded stairwell connects all the floors with a boyant wooden construction. The building is accessible from the basement floor and reaches up 4 stories in a tower-like fashion. Horizontal corridors have been dispensed with. Vertical lines dominate the building’s motif, which is also echoed in the rhythmically placed, high-reaching windows.” The interiors of this imposing building are dominated by timber which creates a warm atmosphere.
